Review: 35MM

The last game we played and reviewed Sherlock Holmes: Crime and Punishments, I said that puzzle solving games are my favorite. That is still true. However if I was to pick a second favorite it would be Post Apocalyptic Survival games. Continuing that train of thought my ultimate favorite type of game would be a Post Apocalyptic Survival Puzzle Solving Game.

35MM falls into that ultimate favorite type of game. 35MM has got it all, game play, puzzles and a great story. The atmosphere in the game is very intense. You are always expecting something to jump out at you.

The 3rd part of the play through I played alone, and I will be honest every new dark hallway that I was heading down I asked myself if I really wanted to. I think you can see that in the play through of the game, especially in the tunnels.

The puzzles were very well placed, one of them actually had me stumped. I had to research online to figure it out. Mostly because the game changed with the last update and a new layer was added to an existing puzzle. Which of course made it all the more confusing, because people who played it through before the patch were giving me an incomplete set of directions.

Nonetheless the puzzle was solved and we moved on. (why is “nonetheless” a one word?)

35MM is an indie game, so going in I knew that there was going to be one thing that the game excels in and the rest are going to be good but not great. I was hoping it would be the atmosphere that the game excelled in and it was. So when I was done with the game I was left satisfied, because I got exactly what I wanted from it, plus some extras.

The gun fighting was very minimal, and when it was going on it wasn’t superb. It was alright and did progress the game for me without making it to frustrating. Exploring was a little underwhelming but I think it was done as a way to add to the atmosphere of a world that is mostly empty now. Gathering was done well, it wasn’t overwhelming or critical to progress where I felt like I was running out of stuff constantly. Which was good for me because I was there for the atmosphere.

All in all I enjoyed it.

There are several endings that you can get I think the one we got on stream is probably the best one. But that’s my opinion. Not going to spoil it for anyone who is planning to play it at some point.

Would I recommend this game? Yes, even more so if you can get it on sale.
