Review: Sherlock Holmes: Crime and Punishments

Review of Sherlock Holmes: Crime and Punishments

First off let me start by saying, I am a huge fan of puzzle games (and good literature). This I found out only recently. I mean I have always known that I gravitate towards games that challenge me intellectually more than any other way. However I never came to that precise of a conclusion until I played Tomb Raider (the new one). It is then I realized I enjoy solving puzzles more than I enjoy anything else. The story being a very close second.

So as you can imagine a game where the main protagonist is the famous detective by the name of Sherlock Holmes, there are going to be puzzles. I have the whole play through streamed live and recorded for your viewing pleasure (you can view it here).

The puzzles were great for the most part. Some were not very intuitive, but regardless were interesting and challenging to solve.

I enjoyed the slow pace of the gameplay. Really gives you a chance to look around and take in the beauty of the whole thing.

The quick time events were not always obvious. I couldn’t save some people even though really wanted to, even after a couple tries couldn’t do it. Just not enough time to find the UI element that will notify you of what needs to be done.

I do feel like the game could have used a little more polish to make it perfect. Having said that none of the things I mentioned are game breaking at all.

My overall impressions of the game are very positive. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at Baker Street.

P.S. I really liked that there was a reference to Fyodor Dostoevsky’s (my favorite author) Crime and Punishments (my favorite book)
