A for Azeroth, Creative Writing

A is for Azeroth: Outline

I have decided to start a series of articles to commemorate my travels through the world of Azeroth.

I would like to go back to when it was that I for the first time got introduced to the world of Azeroth.

In this series my hope is to try and recall as many funny and sad moment in my travels as I can. I would like to write this series as my memoirs of the time I spent playing games that were a huge part of shaping my gaming past and affecting my gaming present.

I don’t know how long the series is going to be, but my hope is to write at least 5 articles and place them on my blog for the single purpose of remembering what happened. In hopes of bringing back those warm feelings that we get from engaging in nostalgic travels through time.

With all the news and drama of legacy servers for World of Warcraft got me thinking: why do people care so much about the old game?

I, for example, played the game when it launched in fact I was in the very first stress test that Blizzard ran. It was in a time when a little website by the name of fileplanet was still the place to go and download things.

At the time that was happening I just got my cable internet, so I was able to download it within a couple hours. However that stress test weekend was the reason one of my close friends went out and bought cable internet. He actually downloaded the whole game and played that weekend on 56k. Eww 56k. I don’t know how many of the current MMO players remember that experience, but back in my day… My friend, after suffering through the lag and the long download realized he needed a better internet connection, it didn’t matter that it would cost him a lot more than the free dial up he had.

That was the power of World of Warcraft when it first came out. It changed the scene of MMO gaming so much that it is very hard to recognize it now. Particularly for those of us that played MMOs prior to the launch of the greatest MMO to date.

Unlike my friend, my MMO days did not start with WoW. I will go into that experience in the following articles.

Once again the purpose of this write up is to establish what it is that I want from the upcoming articles and what my reader can expect.

In the next couple of articles you will be able to read about the following things:

  • First Steps in Azeroth
  • First MMO Experience
  • First Steps in World of Warcraft (this one may span a couple parts)
  • First Expansion: Rest in Peace Vanilla WoW
  • First and Last Best Expansion

The titles and the order of the articles may change as I write them. I may even add a couple more articles as I see fit. Just a rough draft of what to expect next.

Those are the first five articles that I would like to write to commemorate my experiences in the World of Warcraft. What an exciting time it was. That is not to say it isn’t an exciting time now, I still play the game. However there was something about the time and experience that will be written down in those five articles that stands out so crisply in my mind, I feel the need to share.

Thank you for reading this and hopefully getting a chance to go down your own memory lane. Enjoy those warm feelings we all had when we first stepped into Azeroth.

P.S. please note English is not my first language, I am not using that as an excuse for my poor writing skills, but as a call to action from those that are much better at this to help me get better. I am would be more than happy to hear your constructive criticism and grow as a writer.
